Should You Repair or Replace Your Lock

Diagnosing the Actual Problem
We visited an older terrace in Handbridge where the key in the front door lock was stiff and it sometimes caught. The owner was certain a replacement lock would be needed but when our engineer inspected the door it transpired that some hinges had got slack causing the door to sag which meant that the lock was binding against the keep. The mortice lock itself was in perfectly good order. By tightening up the hinges and making some other minor adjustments the problem was soon fixed, including readjusting the keep and giving the mortice lock a good clean and lubrication. The visit took well under an hour to fix and the charge fell well within our normal £80 to £120 price range.
A lock not catching, or a stiff key can often be put right by realigning the door - always worth checking this before replacing locks!
